Detoxifying My Life: Part II

I decided to kick up my June challenge a bit and wanted to share with you all some other environmentally friendly, toxin-free products I love. There are so many toxins around us in products that we love and have been using for years which are having negative effects on our health. In order to create Generational Health we have to focus on all of the aspects of our life that impacts our health. Let's dive in!

It is taboo to talk about menstrual period, although half of the world's population (women) will experience it at some point in their life. What is even more taboo to talk about is the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has no mandate that feminine product companies must include the ingredients list on the box. Let's stop and think for one minute. To be honest I did not realize that there are ingredients in pads and tampons. For the longest time I honestly thought it was just cotton...boy was I wrong. Feminine products can contain synthetic pesticides, chlorine bleaching, fragrances and dyes without us even knowing. This is concerning because the tissue around and inside the vagina is very sensitive.  The great news is there are companies such as L. that are committed to making safe, effective products for our most delicate regions. L. products are made with certified organic cotton, BPA-free plastic applicator, they are free of chlorine bleaching and hypoallergenic + breathable. What I really love about L. is that for every L. product you buy, one is donated to a female entrepreneur in a developing country. Often these women do not have access to sanitary pads resulting in them missing school and work. I first stumbled upon L. products in Target and decided to give them a try. What I love about them besides their commitment to reproductive rights and no having no harsh chemicals is that they are extremely well priced for their value. I now use their subscription service which allows me to receive one or two products shipped directly to my house every month. If you are ready to ditch the monthly trips to the supermarket and adopt a toxin free life click the link here to get started.

I am a millennial so a lot of my friends are starting to have children and talking about the possibility of children with their significant others. I was chatting with one of my girlfriends the other day who is expecting a baby girl about the items she put on her baby registry. One of the concerns she shared with me is all of the chemicals in baby products that she did not know about. This is her first child so she has been doing a lot of research and wants to make sure everything is perfect. She knows I am a big fan of Seventh Generation products so I gave her some Coconut Care moisture lotion and Free & Clear diapers I received for free from them. What is great about Seventh Generation's baby line is that it is clinically proven gentle on baby's skin, pediatrician tested, made with sustainably sourced materials and free of harsh chemicals such as: sulfates, phthalates, paragons and formaldehyde. It is actually scary to think that those types of chemicals can even go in a product made for babies. Seventh Generation can be found in some of your favorite retail stores such as Publix, Winn Dixie, CVS, Target, and Whole Foods.

With everything going on in the world right now I love to find things that calm me down and bring focus back to my life. One of these things are candles. There is nothing more relaxing than sitting on the couch reading one of my favorite books while smelling the fragrance of a soy candle. A lot of people choose a candle for its scent, but its equally important to focus on the type of candle. So why should you invest in soy candles?

  1. Candles are typically made of paraffin wax which comes from petroleum oil which in turn increases CO2 levels in the atmosphere (think global warming and climate change). Soy candles are made from soybean oil and they burn 50% longer and cleaner.
  2. Paraffin candles produce black soot which discolors walls, furniture and can stain the edges of your carpet.
  3. Soy candles are much healthier for humans, pets and the environment. They are non-toxic since they are made of soybean oil and release no known carcinogens into the air.
  4. The scent last longer.

The brand of soy candles that I am loving right now is Honest Company. Their candles are made of soy wax, essential oils and unadulterated plant essences. The soy wax is GMO Free and grown in the U.S. The 8 oz. glass is made of recycled material and can be reused when the candle is done. Lastly, the candles come in three scents - Gardenia Jasmine, Lavender Vanilla, and Orange Cypress. Bonus - they are not tested on animals and contain no animal by-products. Head over to Honest Company to order a couple and let us know what your favorite scent is.
