June Challenge: Detoxifying My Life

The best part about being a public health professional is all the knowledge I attain. The scary thing about being a public health professional is also all the knowledge I attain. Lately, I have been focusing on the environment and how it impacts my health. When I was younger my friends and I use to joke about hairspray destroying the ozone layer, but keeping our hair in place, which to our teenage selves was more important. It was not until much later that I learned how important the ozone layer is (think skin cancer preventing important). When I was younger I also did not understand all the harmful chemicals around us, harmful chemicals that we spray around us, put on us and in our bodies. These chemicals are not only harmful to use, but to the environment as well.

If you are like me you love a good challenge. Lets face it, I am a former college athlete so it is hard for me to just let go of that competitive spirit. I decided that every month I will participate in a challenge. This month I am focusing on detoxifying my life by ditching all of the toxic products I was using and opt-in to using environmentally friendly products. I thought this would be extremely difficult, but I have found some brands and products that I love which have made this transition a breeze.

First Up: Laundry

Alright raise your hand if you love the smell of freshly washed laundry.  Although I love a crisp clean fragrance I have started to notice that my skin has become sensitive to all of the harsh chemicals in major detergent brands. I tried a couple of brands that are deemed for sensitive skin, but could not find one that really spoke to me. That was until I received a sample of Seventh Generation Free & Clear Laundry Detergent for free. I was skeptical at first. It has no artificial brighteners, no dyes and no fragrance so I just knew I was not going to like it. Seventh Generation proved me wrong. I absolutely love it! My clothes are softer, look cleaner and my skin is no longer irritated by all of the harmful chemicals in like those in other brands.

Next Step: Disinfecting

Along with fresh laundry I also adore a clean house. My apartment is filled with white and mirrored furniture (aka things that get dirty quickly) so I spend a lot of time cleaning and disinfecting items. What I did not know before is all of the harsh chemicals in cleaning products. These chemicals can irritate the eyes, throat, cause headaches and cancer. What is really scary is that companies are not required to list the ingredients in their cleaning products. I use to think the harsher the chemicals the cleaner my house will be (SURPRISE that is not the case at all). So I ditched all my harsh cleaning products and opted for environmentally friendly ones from my favorite brands Seventh Generation and Greenberry. Both of these companies are committed to making products that are made from renewable and sustainable materials whenever possible. The best part is they list all of their ingredients on their packaging. What I'm really loving right now is Seventh Generation Disinfecting Spray. Here is the low down, it kills Influenza A virus, H1N1, Rhinovirus type 37, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella enterica, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli on hard non-porous surfaces. I think this one is an ultimate win!

Final Step: Dishes

Dishes use to haunt me in my sleep when I was younger. My sister and I use to switch whose turn it was to do dishes and it always seems like everyone uses more dishes when it is your turn. Now that I am only responsible for my dishes it still seems like there are a lot. I love knowing that the cleaning products  I use cut grease and leave my dishes sparkling without leaving a chemical residue. If you cannot tell yet I love Seventh Generation products. I noticed with a lot of other dishwasher detergent that there is still detergent in the dishwasher when it is done running, not with Seventh Generation! My dishwasher is my go to, but when I am hand washing dishes my favorite product is Mrs. Meyer's Dish Soap. It smells delicious, cleans my dishes perfectly and is gentle on the hands. I got this one from Grove Collaborative. They carry some of my favorite brands such as Mrs. Meyer's, Seventh Generation, Acure and Burt's Bees. As a special for my readers Grove Collaborative is offering a FREE four-piece gift set with your first purchase of $20 or more just follow the link here.
